The Honourable Johanne Gauthier
Born in Montréal, Quebec. Education at College Michèle Provost, University of Montréal (L.L.L.) (Recipient of the Governor General of Canada’s Gold Medal) and the London School of Economics (L.L.M.). Called to the Quebec Bar, 1979.
Before her appointment to the Federal Court, Justice Gauthier was a partner with the law firm Ogilvy Renault in Montréal, a litigator in that firm’s Intellectual Property Law Group and the coordinator of the Technology Team. She also practiced in the field of maritime law and arbitration for more than 15 years. Vice-President of the Comité Maritime International (CMI). Past President of several organizations related to maritime law, maritime policy and electronic commerce such as the Marine Advisory Board (1995-1998), the Canadian Maritime Law Association, the Electronic Commerce Institute of Quebec; commissioner on the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board at Review Commission (1993), and commissioner appointed to review certain aspects of pilotage in the Great Lakes (1990); was appointed judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division (now Federal Court) on December 11, 2002, judge of the Court martial Appeal Court of Canada, on February 20, 2003 and member of the Competition Tribunal on November 26, 2009. She was appointed judge of the Federal Court of Appeal on October 21, 2011. Justice Gauthier has been a member of the Rules Committee of the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal since 2003.
