Book of Authorities and 12 Point Font

TO:          Members of the Legal Profession

FROM:     The Honourable Pierre Blais, Chief Justice

DATE:      June 24, 2010

SUBJECT: Book of Authorities and 12 Point Font

The profession is reminded of the mandatory provisions of Rule 348, in particular, to the requirement that the parties must file the book of authorities at least 30 days before the hearing date. The requirement to file the book of authorities at least 30 days in advance of the hearing has been highlighted by my predecessor, the Honourable John D. Richard, in previous Notices to the Profession, the most recent one dated February 11, 2008.

The parties should highlight or sidebar the passages they rely on, and ensure that the photocopies of documents placed in the book of authorities are of good quality and clear for the Court, free of comments and notes.

Finally, attention is drawn to the requirement found in Rule 65 for a 12 point font for court documents, including references. The preferable fonts are Times New Roman or Arial.
