Law Clerk Program
APPLICATION FOR CLERKSHIP - 2018-2019

Applications are invited for the position of law clerk to a Judge of the Federal Court of Appeal, the Federal Court and the Court Martial Appeal Court. Fifty-six (56) positions are currently available: fifteen (15) with the Federal Court of Appeal, forty (40) with the Federal Court and one (1) with the Court Martial Appeal Court. Applications will automatically be considered for all Courts unless indicated otherwise.

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT
Maximum one (1) year - commencing Tuesday, August 7, 2018.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The current salary is $59,756 per annum. The employment status also includes the benefits pertinent to positions in the federal public service.
Under the direction of the Judges to whom they have been assigned, law clerks research points of law, prepare legal memoranda and generally assist the Judges. At the Federal Court, law clerks also assist the Prothonotaries.

(3) Varying language requirements:
Proficiency in one of Canada's official language is mandatory. Proficiency in the other official language is required for certain positions only.

The candidates must submit their application with the following documentation by January 19, 2017.
- a curriculum vitae (specify citizenship);
- official transcripts of law school marks and copies of transcripts for all other post-secondary studies;
- three (3) letters of reference;
- a letter explaining why the position is being sought; and
- one (1) sample of legal writing which the candidates have entirely written themselves.
** Please note that official law school transcripts and letters of reference may not be submitted by the candidate but rather must be sent directly to the administrators of the program by the university and referees. See "Note and FAQ" below for additional information.
VISITS AND INTERVIEWS
Judges of the Courts may visit the law schools to promote the law clerk program in the Fall of 2016. Interviews will take place between February and April 2017.

Certain law societies recognize the service of the law clerks as fulfilling all or part of their articling requirements. Candidates should verify this with the law society of the jurisdiction in which they will seek admission to practice. Being called to the Bar in any jurisdiction is NOT a requirement for the positions.

1. Should I apply online or with a paper application?
The online application is greatly preferred as it facilitates our work and is environmentally-friendly.
2. Do I submit all my documents online?
As an applicant, you are required to upload the following directly within the online application (cover letter, c.v., writing sample and undergraduate transcript).
You can upload your undergrad transcript in the online application. However, your law school transcript MUST be forwarded to us directly by the University Registrar, at the following address:

Your referees must send their letter of reference in PDF format, titled as specified below, to email@example.com.
The letters should be titled thus: YOURNAMErefREFEREENAME
For example, if Professor Ashley Smith writes a letter of reference for John Doe, the letter should be titled: DOErefSMITH
3. If my references or law transcript are received after the deadline, am I disqualified?
You are responsible for submitting a complete online application by January 19, 2017. This includes the documents you are responsible for - cover letter, c.v., writing sample and undergraduate transcript. You will not be penalized if your official law school transcript or letters of reference are late. However, be aware that we cannot process your application until we have received all necessary documentation, including the official law school transcript and reference letters. That means that the judges will not see your application until then.
4. Can I, and should I, submit more than one writing sample?
You may if you wish, but submitting two writing samples is usually warranted only if you submit a sample in each official language.
5. Once my application is complete, what happens next?
Once all the necessary documents have been received and it has been determined that you possess the mandatory qualifications, your application will appear in a database accessible to the judges. They will make a selection of interviewees, and interviews will be held from February to April. Once the Supreme Court of Canada, has made all its clerkship offers, the Federal Courts proceed with their offers. We have an agreement with the Court of Appeal of Ontario to issue simultaneous offers, so that if you receive several offers, you will have time to decide between the courts.
6. Will I be informed if I am not hired?
Once all the law clerks have been hired, you will be informed that the process is over.
